Biography

My biography outlines key events and influencers that have shaped my personal theory of practice.  My experience has been varied, and each new experience and opportunity to put into practice what I have learnt has built towards forming a philosophy of teaching and learning that incorporates both knowledge and practice.  I have acquired a range of learning - from the corporate world, through to the business world, and finally coalescing in the sphere of education.   I have had the privilege of gaining input from experienced mentors and influencers that have helped shape my values and expand my outlook.

Teaching Philosophy

My teaching philosophy statement articulates the foundation for my approach to teaching and programme development. My approach is consistent with a constructivist approach to teaching and learning where learners are actively involved in creating knowledge and

understanding through experience and reflection.  Programme development is based on a 'constructive alignment' approach (Biggs, 2003), emphasising the alignment of teaching and assessment with learning outcomes and objectives.

Teaching and Resources

My teaching practise, programme design and the course resource material I have produced show how I have implemented my teaching philosophy in the workplace.  Specific examples include:

Hearing God's Voice - an 8 week evening class I presented during May/June/July 2014 for the Elim Christian Centre, South

Auckland.  This was presented in a "workshop" style where participants were provided opportunities for discussion, reflection

and other activities throughout the course.  Click on the link to the left to view a pdf of the student workbook.

Level 5 Diploma (internship) resources - During 2014 I developed a number of resources for our Level 5 Diploma programme.  These included a Student Handbook that was specific to this programme, and updated Supervisors and Mentors guidelines. Redevelopment of this internship programme during 2014 (Case Study 1) required taking a holistic approach that integrated theoretical learning with its practical application in the workplace.  I developed this diagrammatically and included it in the updated Supervisors and Mentors guidelines in order to ensure all parties involved in the internship had a full understanding of the work-integrated learning model the programme was based on.

Certificate in Christian Ministries (Internship) Level 4 programme development - During 2012/13 I designed a level 4 internship programme, including writing all lecturer notes and student workbooks.  Topics included: Practical Ministry, Leadership, Doctrine, Interpreting Scripture, Small Groups and Pastoral Care, Church Management, Lasting the Distance in Ministry and Spiritual Formation.  This course was delivered by blended mode which included live online lectures (via WizIQ) and attendance at four block courses during the year.  Participants were situated in local churches throughout New Zealand.  Specific detail is found in Case Study 2.
